A basic overview into the rugby industry; including how rugby players earn their income, the major tournaments and key dates for 2023.

Governing Bodies

The sport is governed globally by World Rugby, formerly known as the International Rugby Board (IRB). World Rugby is responsible for the regulation and development of rugby at all levels, from grassroots to elite competition.

Major Tournaments

The major international rugby tournament is the Rugby World Cup, which is held every four years. The tournament features the top national rugby teams from around the world, competing for the title of world champion. The Rugby World Cup is organized and run by World Rugby.

In addition to the Rugby World Cup, there are several other international rugby tournaments, including the Six Nations Championship, the Rugby Championship, and the British and Irish Lions tour. These tournaments are also organized and run by World Rugby.

At the club level, the premier professional rugby union competitions include the European Rugby Champions Cup and the Guinness PRO14. The European Rugby Champions Cup is an annual tournament featuring the top rugby clubs from European countries, while the Guinness PRO14 is a league competition featuring clubs from Ireland, Italy, Scotland, South Africa, and Wales. These competitions are run by the European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) and PRO Rugby respectively.

Player Income

Professional rugby players earn their income through a variety of means, including salaries, bonuses, endorsements, and appearance fees.

Salaries: Like most professional athletes, rugby players earn salaries from their clubs or national teams. Salaries can vary widely depending on a player’s experience, skill level, and marketability.

Bonuses: Rugby players may also receive bonuses for winning matches, tournaments, or individual awards. These bonuses can be a significant source of income for top players, especially in international competitions such as the Rugby World Cup.

Endorsements: Rugby players with a high profile and marketability may also earn income from endorsement deals with companies that sell rugby-related products, such as sportswear, equipment, and supplements. Endorsement deals can be a lucrative source of income, especially for players who are well-known and successful.

Appearance fees: Similar to other sports, rugby players may earn income from appearance fees. These fees are paid to players by clubs or organizations in exchange for their participation in events or activities.
