introduction to golf

A basic overview into the golf industry; including how golf players earn their income, the major tournaments and key dates for 2023.

Governing Bodies

The two main governing bodies of golf are the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews (R&A) and the United States Golf Association (USGA). Together, they oversee the rules and regulations of the sport, including the organization of the four major tournaments in golf.

Major Tournaments

The four major golf tournaments, also known as the majors, are the Masters Tournament, the U.S. Open, The Open Championship (commonly referred to as the British Open), and the PGA Championship. The Masters is held annually at the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, USA, while the U.S. Open, British Open, and PGA Championship are held at different locations around the world.

In addition to the majors, there are several other high-profile tournaments on the PGA Tour and European Tour, such as the Players Championship, FedEx Cup, and the Ryder Cup, which is a biennial team competition between Europe and the United States.

In 2022, LIV Golf was launched as an alternative golf tour in direct competition to the PGA. The 2023 LIV Golf League will consist of 14 events across the world. At each one, players compete for both individual and team points and prize money. The Individual Champion will be decided by the points accumulated throughout the season, while there will also be a season-ending Team Championship event.

Organizers

The major tournaments in golf are organized by different bodies. The Masters is organized by Augusta National Golf Club, the U.S. Open is organized by the USGA, The Open Championship is organized by the R&A, and the PGA Championship is organized by the Professional Golfers’ Association of America (PGA).

Professional Golfer Income

Professional golfers earn their income through a variety of sources, including tournament winnings, sponsorships, endorsements, and appearance fees. Prize money from tournaments is the most significant source of income for professional golfers. The prize money for each tournament is divided among the players based on their performance, with the winner receiving the largest share.

Sponsorships and endorsements are also a significant source of income for professional golfers. Companies pay golfers to endorse their products, such as apparel, golf clubs, and other equipment. Endorsement deals can be extremely lucrative, especially for golfers who are well-known and successful.

Appearance fees are another source of income for professional golfers. Some tournaments pay golfers to appear at their events, which can provide a reliable source of income even if the golfer does not perform well in the tournament.
